Almost 10 years since school! A look back!
Does anyone ever sit there and think about the people you went to school with? School in general! Next year will mark 10 years since I left school and I constantly catch myself wishing I could go back! Who's parents said to them "Enjoy school while it lasts as it will be the best days of your life" and you responded with a sarcastic, jeering chuckle and a "bullshit!" Oh how right she was though! Why did we all think that school life was hard? What was hard about it? Juggling relationships, having sex, pretending to do homework, winging exams and mainly passing on coursework that you're parents completed for you, starting at 9:30 and finishing 16:00, weekends off, school holidays, and abundance of people offering to do something after school, free sports classes and gym, free drama classes and half decent food whenever you wanted! It was just simply incredible. I wish I could go back retaining the knowledge I have now and the mindset I have now and just retake all of school and smash it. Choose actual realistic subjects to pursue that will actually lead to a job that does not require you to work 50 hours a week. Even then it doesn't really matter, you still don't get a job regardless of qualifications but still I'd love another crack at it.
I think we start secondary school too young, with important exams coming when we are 16 and making us choose the most important decision of our schooling (options) at 14 years old! Wtf? If you were anything like me at 14 I was far too busy chasing girls, smoking weed and playing rugby to think clearly about a way to shape my life... it's stupid. I think that schools really should be mandatory until 18 years old, with options being chosen at 16 and exams at 18. Your mind is still developing at 14 how can you expect 14 year olds to make a sensible and rational decision about their future? Think about college. if you're anything like me you will agree that you did more work, had more fun and learnt more in these 2 years than you did all previous years at school! Obviously at college you are 16-18! Just don't understand it! Uniforms were bullshit as well. Made it feel like a regimented prison more than a place of learning. College came along you're in your own clothes, more relaxed, teachers are more relaxed and you just learn so much better! My drama teacher even took all of us down the pub for a couple of pints! My other drama teacher even gave me a roll up, legend.
Anyway back to the original question, do you ever think about your old school mates? Where are they now? Obviously you retain some of those friends who you hopefully keep for life but what about the people that drift off on their own? In and age of Facebook and other forms of social media we have most of those people sitting there on Facebook, never talking to them, just silently stalking their posts in hope of finding out more about their life, like some kind of nosey gremlin. Recently it's all babies, babies, babies and the occasional wedding... but there are some people that don't have Facebook or don't actually share everything on it like most people. So if any of you are somehow reading this, hope you're doing well and good luck class of '08 Blatchington Mill!
How fucking good was heads down thumbs up!? The class could be rioting with the teacher held hostage and the room in pieces, anyone walks in and says "heads down thumbs up?" You can bet your arse that the room would be spotless and every little bastard would be in the seat with their heads down and thumbs up. Who else cheated by looking at the pinchers shoes? Don't even think about lying I know you did! Who felt completely fucking betrayed when your mate was the pincher and they didn't pinch you? Looking around the room wondering which of the bastards that are standing up you may have to kill later. Thinking about it later though, you come to the realisation and decision that your mate was just being tactical. He couldn't choose his best friend in the whole wide world or you would know straight away it was him! There was always that little prick that pinched your thump too hard too, starting a never ending war between you. I will brake his thumb!
Why was there set areas of the school that just "belonged" to certain clicks? Like all the Indie kids (the ones that no one likes but because there was so fucking many of them they looked popular) they hung around outside the canteen, that was their spot, everyone knew it so no one invaded. The area by the tennis courts was where the oddjobs and misfits sort of hung out (my zone baby) ranging from emo to freak to chav to skater to slag etc. We all just sort of gravitated towards one another, some of the best times of my life were spent there. A little bit off from us on the benches we're the smart kids (geeks, nerds etc.) all nice guys and girls but not the most social of butterfly's! Round by the field near the car park outside the theatre sat the emo, goth, grunge crew. Parkour, music and gerneral randomness happened here. Of course the fields, tennis court and basketball courts were occupied by the sporty popular kids, the ones that would say hi to you but feel like they deserve a reward for doing so. Like when the really really hot popular girls go around being pushed by their friends to go up to some poor ugly/less popular guy and say "will you go out with me?" You're fucked, you say "yes" they laugh at you and insult you for being ugly and unpopular you say "no" they shout at you calling you ugly and unpopular and you would never get a girl like her... ahhh good times! Finally the smokers, probably the happiest and most universal of groups. People from every click coming together to bond over smoking, a deadly way to make friends but hey I would not have had it any other way.
Heads down thumbs up anyone?

Hello Kieren, thinking it is nearly 10 years since we all left school is definitely a scary thought. I do sit back sometimes and wonder what people I had known for my entire school life are doing these days, luckily I do occasionally bump in to a few people here and there and nice to have that brief chat on catching up but at the same time it just shows how social media has taken over our lives and everyone ends up just sitting behind a screen instead of going out there and seeing the world.
